Protected spaces —natural parks onland, marine protected areas in the seas— are time machines. When such spaces are well protected from deleterious human influences, they allow rebuilding the abundance and diversity of plants and animals that prevailed in the past, before we burned the flora or ate the fauna.

Protected spaces also simulate, in the present, the abundance that we could rebuild almost everywhere in the future if we learned to live and consume sustainably and let nature regain its biodiversity. This is, incidentally, the best, and probably only way for us to actually have a future.
